We are looking for a primary school for our daughter, Sophie. In the first school that I visited, I had a vague sense is unease. On reflection, I was concerned that the children were being trained to be of a certain type, and that Sophie might lose her unique character, her vitality.
I voiced this concern to a friend. He pointed out that we - teachers, parents - are training children all of the time. I objected to this at first, but of course he's right.
I'm particularly interested in those ways we train children that are out of our awareness. I have since visited some other schools. Some of these schools, and the teachers within them, seem to be more explicit or aware of the ways in which they are training children than others.
Given all of this, how do we choose who trains our child?
